Introduction
Some films have a knack for blending family drama and comedy, but Baby and Baby struggles to find its footing in either. Directed by Prathap, the film attempts to revive a formula that has been explored countless times in Tamil cinema—baby mix-ups, inheritance disputes, and traditional family expectations. However, instead of breathing new life into these familiar tropes, the film gets tangled in outdated storytelling, weak humor, and underdeveloped characters.
Plot Summary
The story revolves around two couples, Siva (Jai) and Priya (Pragya Nagra), and Guna (Yogi Babu) and Malar (Sai Dhanya), who accidentally swap their newborns at an airport. This seemingly minor mix-up spirals into chaos when Siva’s father (Sathyaraj) insists on a male heir to inherit the family’s wealth, while Guna’s father (Ilavarasu) believes his granddaughter is the key to his family's prosperity. What follows is a series of convoluted attempts to switch the babies back while keeping their traditional fathers in the dark. As if this wasn’t enough, greedy relatives with their own agenda further complicate the situation, leading to a predictable sequence of mishaps and attempted kidnappings.

Strengths and Weaknesses
The film's premise has potential, and its ensemble cast is a major selling point. Veterans like Sathyaraj, Anandaraj, Ilavarasu, and Nizhalgal Ravi bring experience to their roles, making even the most absurd moments somewhat watchable. Yogi Babu, with his impeccable comic timing, provides the rare moments of genuine humor, despite being stuck in a role that offers little originality.
However, the film's biggest flaw lies in its writing. The humor feels forced, relying on outdated gags and loud exchanges rather than sharp wit. Many jokes fall flat, and in some cases, the comedic timing feels off, making it hard to tell whether a scene was meant to be funny or dramatic. The fight sequences and songs serve as mere fillers, adding nothing substantial to the narrative. Moreover, the screenplay is riddled with predictable twists, making the film feel like a relic from the early 2000s rather than a contemporary family entertainer.
Performances
Jai, in the lead role, seems lost for most of the film, with his character lacking depth and purpose. Pragya Nagra and Sai Dhanya deliver decent performances, but their roles don’t allow them to showcase much range. Sathyaraj and Ilavarasu, despite their talent, are given one-dimensional characters, leaving them with little to work with. While Yogi Babu manages to salvage some scenes with his spontaneous humor, it’s clear that his dialogue additions in dubbing were necessary to inject some life into an otherwise dull script.
Technical Aspects
D. Imman’s background score is serviceable but does little to enhance key emotional moments. The cinematography by TP Sarathy is competent but uninspired, failing to add visual flair to the storytelling. The editing feels sluggish, making an already stretched-out plot feel even longer.
Final Verdict
Baby and Baby is a missed opportunity. With a talented cast and a premise that could have been engaging, the film ultimately falls flat due to weak writing, outdated humor, and a lack of emotional depth. It attempts to recreate the charm of old-school Tamil family dramas but ends up feeling like a worn-out template with no fresh perspective. Unless you're a die-hard fan of the cast, this one might be better skipped.
